Rocks and Rock Cycle

3 Types of Rock: Igneous, Sedimentary & Metamorphic | AMNH

A rock is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter. It is categorized by the minerals included, its chemical composition and the way in which it is formed. And there are three types of rocks. the sedimentary, the metamorphic, and the igneous rock. Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material. Together, all these particles are called sediment. Metamorphic rocks are formed under the surface of the earth from the metamorphosis (change) that occurs due to intense heat and pressure (squeezing). And Igneous rocks are formed when magma (molten rock deep within the earth) cools and hardens. Sometimes the magma cools inside the earth, and other times it erupts onto the surface from volcanoes (in this case, it is called lava).

HOW ROCK CHANGE

Interactives . The The Rock Cycle . The Rock Cycle
Heat and Pressure – A similar process happens to rocks beneath the earth’s surface. Due to movements in the crust, rocks are frequently pulled under the surface of the earth, where temperatures increase dramatically the farther they descend.

Weathering and Erosion – All objects on the earth’s surface are exposed to the wind, along with many other elements — water, the sun, temperature changes. Over time, these factors wear objects down and break them apart. The resulting bits and pieces of material are called sediment.

Melting – The same thing happens to a rock when it is heated enough. Of course, it takes a lot of heat to melt a rock.

Compacting and Cementing – The same thing happens to sediment formed from the weathering and erosion of rock. Over time, sediment accumulates in oceans, lakes, and valleys, eventually building up in layers and weighing down the material underneath.

Cooling – Similarly, liquid magma also turns into a solid — a rock — when it is cooled. Any rock that forms from the cooling of magma is an igneous rock.

These are the five processes by which rock is formed and changed. After learning these processes, i am very surprised and amazed because i learn that that´s how rocks form and change.

ROCK CYCLE

The rock cycle

A useful way to illustrate how the three main types of rock are related to one another and how changes to rocks happen in a recurring sequence is the rock cycle. It can be presented in a diagram in the right side.

The discussion went well; I learned a lot about rocks. After I studied and answered the rock cycle interactive questions, I learned a lot about the types of rocks, which are sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, how rocks are formed and changed, and the rock cycle. It’s fun to study rocks and the rock cycle because it’s amazing how rocks form and change. This is also one of the reasons we live on such a lovely planet. This blog will end here. See you on the next blog!
